The Finance Committee backed $67,000 in unbudgeted reserve transfers: $41,000 for Town Administrator Thatcher Kezer's accrued vacation payout and $26,000 for searches for his successor and the next chief financial officer.
Marblehead collected $974,812 in local meals and rooms taxes for fiscal 2026, up $273,347 from the prior year. The World Cup and 250th-anniversary tourism bump largely have yet to reach the town's books, making fall distributions the next number to watch.
New ownership has made Marblehead protective of its longtime diner, but regulars, staff and a discerning pancake panel tell Katie Ring that the food and atmosphere remain familiar. Maria Torres' family says it plans to preserve the Driftwood's recipes, longtime staff and cash-only character.
Finance turnover shadows first override accounting
Marblehead's first public accounting of $17.3 million in new tax revenue is due in October as three senior officials tied to town finances prepare to leave. The departures of school finance chief Michael Pfifferling, Chief Financial Officer Aleesha Nunley Benjamin and Town Administrator Thatcher Kezer leave unfinished budget work and two searches underway.
The Select Board accepted Draft C of Marblehead's first town charter and dissolved the 11-member Charter Committee after more than two years of work. The 32-page document remains a working draft, and any final charter must clear Town Meeting, state legislative review and a townwide vote.
All six adults aboard were taken to area hospitals after the boat crashed completely onto Grays Rock late Aug. 6, throwing some occupants into the water and onto the ledge. Marblehead firefighters and harbormasters from Marblehead, Salem and Beverly mounted the rescue; two people suffered serious injuries, two had injuries believed to be minor and two were treated and released.
U.S. Sen. Ed Markey and U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton traded allegations of corruption during their second Democratic primary debate, but the moderators left key claims unsupported or unresolved. With one debate remaining before the Sept. 1 primary, the sharpest divide was often over evidence rather than policy.
A plain-language look at every dollar raised and spent by the candidates for Massachusetts' 6th Congressional District, built from their own official Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings.

COLLEEN'S GARDEN:
Roses relocate as daylilies deliver
Colleen Connor relocates struggling roses to a sunnier patch as daylilies provide the reliable color her vegetable garden has not. She also lays out late-summer jobs, from dividing crowded perennials to trimming hedges and making room for fall lettuce.
Technology can compare flights, inspect a hotel block, translate a menu and organize an itinerary, but not every tool deserves the same trust. Theresa Myung Hee Milewski explains when to search widely, book directly and let artificial intelligence handle the tedious parts.
